The RRS James Cook was formally named in February 2007 and will begin its first research cruise later in the year. The ship, built by Flekkefjord Slipp & Maskinbabrikk AS, was designed to provide a platform for conducting leading edge marine science research.

One of the first cruises is to be for Oceanlab at the University of Aberdeen. During the cruise one of the key goals is to find deep ocean sites suitable for photographing its  elusive inhabitants.

The Olex system with its multibeam capabilities enabled will be used to provide real-time seabed gridding and mosaicing of data.  This provides the most efficient way of imaging the seabed without the need for data processing or transfer of the data to another processing package.

In late April 2007 oceanDTM upgraded the Oceanlab laptop to its full multibeam capability and installed the system on the James Cook.  The Olex system successfully interfaced with both the Kongsberg EM120 and EM710.
